Laura Slater Fabric via Primitive Modernism Blog

Laura Slater Textiles

I was compiling some of my favorite pattern pins on pinterest for a blog post and upon searching for the source of a particular pin (below) I discovered textile designer Laura Slater (found via Danielle de Lange’s amazing Flickr account. Check out her inspiring Style Files/Travel Files blogs). Considering my heart dropped about three feet when I saw her designs, I thought she deserved her very own blog post!

This was the original swoon-worthy image:

Then I discovered her other fabrics and products. See below. I mean… I can’t deal, can you?

The lifestyle shots of her products are spot on. Items are placed on mid-century modern furniture with a stark concrete backdrop. Perfect for her abstract patterns which clearly have mid-century influences. Though 2-dimensional, her patterns seem to be sculptural – her free-form shapes are reminscent of Calder, her rough textures of a brutalist bronze. I am in love.

Ilona Royce Smithkin

Green Bananas

This woman is so fantastic! What a spirit – I want to be like her at 90. I randomly came across this video and I’m so glad that I pressed play – it made my day! Meet 90 year old Ilona Royce Smithkin. She is more lively than most 20 year olds, she paints, she sings, and wears lashes made of her own hair. Confused about this posts’ title? Watch the video :)

Bonus: I checked out the source of the video, Advanced Style, and love what this guy is doing: “My name is Ari Seth Cohen. I roam the streets of New York looking for the most stylish and creative older folks. Respect your elders and let these ladies and gents teach you a thing or two about living life to the fullest. Advanced Style offers proof from the wise and silver-haired set that personal style advances with age.” Check out his blog at: www.advancedstyle.blogspot.com

DIY Wall Shelving Unit

If you want to spend $2500 for a Danish Modern Wall Shelving Unit, go right on ahead. Truthfully, I would if I could, but for now I’m going to follow this DIY version from Molly over at Almost Makes Perfect. It seriously looks so fabulous that you would never think that all materials came from Home Depot and only cost about $250.

Wow, go Molly! It turned out so great and her styling skills are pretty great too – and it doesn’t hurt that she has that ridiculously amazing fireplace as a center piece. For a step by step guide and list of materials head on over to Almost Makes Perfect.

bookend-legend

Vintage Haulage / 1

I set out to find the coolest vintage bookends on the internet and had to force myself to stop looking because there are SO MANY amazing ones out there. I will definitely have to do another bookend haul in the future.

My taste can be quite eclectic as you will see below. From brass modernist bookends to mystical crystal sculpture bookends and porcelain elephants in between. Some have already been sold :( – but some are still available for sale (yay!).

Upon my search I discovered two iconic mid-century modern designers; Carl Aubock and Ben Seibel. You will see various bookend designs from each of them below. They are BEYOND!

About Face

Who doesn’t love a gallery wall? No one, that’s who. They are a great way to showcase an eclectic assortment of paintings with different shapes, sizes, and styles. Another fun idea is to collect a particular subject matter, for example portraits, and group only those paintings together. I used to think old portraits were creepy, but I now appreciate the history and personality that they hold and emit. Below are some of my favorite wall gallery collections of portraits that I have come across and a handful of to die for portrait paintings.
