Primitive Modernism is a Los Angeles-based jewelry design company with designs that echo times past. Each creation bears the mark of an ancient relic, unearthed in an archaeological dig. Our designs draw inspiration from ancient cultures around the world, recognizing the beauty of handmade objects crafted from natural materials. The colors, patterns, and textures found in ritual adornments, dwellings, textiles, and pottery remain a continual influence on Primitive Modernism’s design aesthetic.

Primitive Modernism is the creative vision of Susan Joy Brownstein. Over the last 25 years, Susan has created several limited-edition jewelry and accessory collections. In her most recent capsule collection, her hand-carved walnut wood and sculpted clay designs were cast in metal. This unique process captured even the most delicate wood grain patterns and surface details, creating a richly organic texture on each piece.

Transforming the organic into the modern, Susan creates timeless pieces that are both sculptural and elegant. Guided by an appreciation for fine handmade craftsmanship, innovative design, and the beauty that comes from bringing the two together, each piece Susan creates becomes a wearable work of art.

MORE ABOUT THE DESIGNER

A Los Angeles native, Primitive Modernism designer Susan Joy Brownstein grew up in a creative home surrounded by art, music, and dance. Although she originally pursued a degree in Marine Sciences to fulfill her childhood dream of becoming a veterinarian for marine mammals, her love of the arts ultimately led her studies in a new direction.

Susan went on to develop her skills in photography, fine art, printmaking, graphic design, and jewelry design, further refining her natural eye for color, composition, and form.

In addition to Primitive Modernism, Susan also runs a boutique graphic design agency, where she creates fresh, boldly designed websites and printed goods for small businesses and events, both locally and worldwide. You can view her graphic design portfolio at www.SusanJoyDesigns.com.

The latest:

Susan’s current creative obsession is drawing and painting, a natural evolution of her sculptural work into two-dimensional form. This new body of work continues her exploration of shape, texture, and timeless design, and will soon be introduced through original artwork, prints, and thoughtfully crafted objects for the home and everyday life.
